Rowan County, North Carolina Inmate Search
An inmate search in Rowan County is a public record inquiry that allows individuals to confirm if a person is in local custody. Inmates in Rowan County are generally housed at the county’s Detention Center or the Detention Center Annex, both of which are managed by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. An inmate search provides critical information, such as the inmate’s booking details, location, and custody status.
The Piedmont Correctional Institution, a large state prison for adult males operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC), is also situated in Rowan County. However, it is distinct from the county jail and houses individuals sentenced to longer state terms.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Rowan County Detention Center
Individuals may send money to an inmate in the Rowan County Detention Center through the following means.
Online Deposits
The Sheriff’s Office partners with a third-party vendor for electronic deposits. Individuals can send money to an inmate on their phone or computer through the vendor’s website. Individuals should note that there may be a fee for using the vendor’s services.
Lobby Kiosks (In-Person)
Individuals can deposit funds into an inmate’s account directly at the detention center using the kiosk in the facility’s lobby. These machines generally accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards and are typically available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Mail Deposits
Individuals who prefer to send funds by mail may send a money order to the detention facility. The money order must include the inmate’s name and their ID number. Personal checks and cash are not accepted via mail.
All funds sent to an inmate online, in person, or by mail are deposited into the inmate’s commissary account and not provided to them in cash. The inmate may then purchase their desired items or services using the funds in the account.
Inmate Search by Jail Facility
Rowan County primarily utilizes the Rowan County Detention Center and Detention Center Annex to house all inmates. This means that regardless of where or by what police department in the county an individual is arrested, they are taken to and detained at either of these facilities.
Both facilities are managed by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, so individuals may be located using the Sheriff’s Inmate Lists application. A search can also be conducted by calling or visiting the facilities.
Rowan County Visitation Rules and Schedules
The Rowan County Detention Center and Detention Center Annex follow the same visitation rules and procedures. The facilities use on-site and remote video visits made available through a private vendor (see Rowan County Detention Center Visitation Guidelines for the specific vendor).
Who Can Visit?
The Rowan County Detention Center generally does not restrict any category of persons from visiting. However, no one under 18 can visit without a parent or legal guardian, and children must be supervised and controlled at all times. Visits are limited to four people per visit.
Where Does Visitation Happen?
Visitation for inmates housed in both facilities occurs at the Rowan County Detention Annex. This means that if an individual wishes to see someone housed in the main detention facility, they will report to the Annex facility (at their scheduled time), and the inmate will be moved from the main jail to the video visitation booths for the visit to happen. Remote visits may also be from the visitor’s home.
How to Schedule a Visit
On-site and remote video visits can be scheduled through the private vendor’s website. On-site visits can also be scheduled using the kiosk at the jail annex. If multiple people are coming for the same slot, only one person needs to schedule, but that person must be present at the visit.
Inmates are generally allowed one on-site visit per week. If an inmate attempts to have more than one on-site visit per week, they may have to forfeit their slot the following week. Visits must be programmed at least 24 hours in advance, but no more than 30 days ahead.
Visiting Hours and Costs
On-site video visits are available 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sunday through Saturday, and are free. Remote video visits also happen at the same time, but cost 30 cents per minute.
Violations and Consequences
The jail enforces strict rules regarding visitors and inmates, which, when broken, can result in several consequences. The jail classifies violations into three levels, with escalating penalties.
- Level 1 Offenses: These include inappropriate clothing, failure to supervise a child, disrespect to staff, being late to check in, or failing to update one’s info. Level 1 offenses may result in the denial of the visit.
- Level 2 Offenses: These include repeated Level 1 issues, cursing, making a mess at the station, disturbing others in the lobby, or talking about criminal/gang activity. These offenses carry a one-month loss of visitation privileges.
- Level 3 Offenses: These include repeated Level 2 issues, damaging equipment, trying to manipulate the system, conspiring to bring in contraband, indecent exposure, showing inappropriate images, or bringing a cell phone or banned item into the video visitation area. Level 3 offenses may result in the indefinite loss of visitation privileges.
